RICH IN THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

[4 things I'd tell myself if I started over today]

Welcome to The Quiet Rich, the weekly email that gives you a “rich life” and a “quiet mind.” Today, you’ll get the 4 secrets to build your brand as a thought leader (and why that’s the easiest way to start a lifestyle business).

But first, big thanks to today’s sponsor: Kajabi

As many of you know, I left my role at Google in May to become a full-time entrepreneur. 🙌 But here’s the mistake most new entrepreneurs make: They become bottlenecks (and can’t take a summer “break” without things in their business breaking).

I’d much rather have passive income streams that sell while I’m napping on a beach in Italy this summer. Imho, the easiest passive income is turning your expertise into a digital course on Kajabi. Record it once. Sell it thousands of times (while sipping an aperol spritz).

Learn exactly how others turned their passions into thriving businesses.

CONTEXT

Can’t believe I’m saying this. In 2 years, I’ve grown from 1k - 850k followers across LinkedIn, Instagram, and my newsletter. 👀

And it has changed the entire trajectory of my career. In 2023, I had a handful of LinkedIn connections and a ton of Imposter Syndrome.

I never imagined that in such a short time, I would:

  • Rank #1 productivity creator and #1 female LinkedIn creator worldwide

  • Personally coach 700+ of the fastest-growing accounts on LinkedIn

  • Get featured in huge publications like Forbes and Business Insider

  • Land a major book deal with one of the world’s top publishers (!)

  • Meet dozens of bestselling authors who are now good friends

  • Receive daily invitations to speak on huge podcasts

  • Get quoted on Instagram by Will Smith 🤯

  • All while thriving in my career at Google

A LOT can happen in 2 years, my friends.

If I started over today with 0 followers on LinkedIn, here are 4 things I’d tell myself:

THE 4 THINGS

1) You’re never going to feel 100% “ready.” (And that’s ok.)

Here's something nobody talks about: confidence isn't about feeling fearless. It's about feeling the fear and doing it anyway.

And the fear of, “What are people going to think if I start posting like an influencer on LinkedIn?” is so real.

I would know. I sat on the sidelines for 2 years before posting my first piece of content. Know what happened during those 2 years?

  • Someone with half my experience built a 6-figure side hustle

  • Someone with worse writing skills got hired at my dream company

  • Someone with way fewer credentials landed 5-figure speaking gigs

The difference? They had a powerful brand on LinkedIn. And I was still waiting to feel ready. 😅

2) Decide what you’re in this for.

You don’t just want social media followers. You want to land your dream role / promotion. You want to attract opportunities like keynotes and articles in Forbes directly to your email. You want a thriving business with quality leads in your DMs. You want to start a multi-6-figure side hustle. Maybe even write a book that hits the bestseller list.

I always tell my coaching clients— the goal is not to have as many LinkedIn followers as possible. The goal is to have the right LinkedIn followers. The ones who love your work so much that they’ll buy anything you come out with: (A new product, a coaching session, tickets to your live event, an online course, a book, etc.)

THOSE are the metrics to optimize for. "Likes" are not cash.

——

3) You don’t need millions of followers. You just need 1,000 true fans.

That’s the first line of a really good essay called “1,000 True Fans” by Kevin Kelly.

Here’s his point. To earn $1 Million as a creator? You just need a small and loyal audience.

And here’s the cool thing.

No matter how ridiculously niche your interests are, there are at least 1,000 other people in the world with those same exact interests.

Seriously.

Even if only 1 person in a million was interested in it (and that’s a really low bar lol), that’s still at least 8,000 people

You don’t need to be a famous celebrity to earn a living as a thought leader. Just focus on winning the hearts and minds of 1,000 true fans.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

The final (and most important) thing I’d tell myself is this:

4) Learn the shortcuts from someone whose content you love.

Roger Federer has a coach. Oprah Winfrey has a coach. Tony Robbins has a coach. Why are you struggling to figure it out all by yourself when someone else knows a much faster route? I love this quote from Ben Meer: “Self-made is a myth. Everyone needs guidance.”

You could spend YEARS struggling to get traction on LinkedIn. Or you could learn how to do it in a few hours of coaching.

There’s someone out there who needs to know your story. I’m rooting for you to start telling it.

If you’re ready to build your brand as a thought leader on LinkedIn, Ben Meer and I teamed up to teach you exactly how we did it.
